Canadian task forces have served in the southwest Asia theatre of operations since 30 October 2001, when HMCS Halifax joined the coalition fleet scouring the North Arabian Sea for al-Qaida terrorists and their supporters.

Since then, thousands and thousands of Canadian soldiers, sailors, airmen and airwomen have deployed to the Persian Gulf region, the North Arabian Sea, the waters off the Horn of Africa and Afghanistan itself on a series of operations representing Canada in the following international missions:

This timeline was compiled by the Public Affairs team at CEFCOM Headquarters as a reference for Canadians. Its primary objectives are:

  • to record the dates of important events and identify their participants; and
  • to clarify the relationships between Canadian Forces operations and the international efforts to which they contributed.
